Nynex unplugs its raucous image, dials new number; revamped utility still faces economic, competitive, regulatory obstacles

Article Abstract:

Nynex Corp has gone through some fundamental changes in recent months to improve its image and become more competitive after a number of damaging events including a disastrous audit, a criminal indictment and a strike. However, these improvements may not be enough in the face of growing government regulation, increased competition and a slow-moving Northeast economy. Nynex has taken steps to reduce its workforce and its overall costs, selling unprofitable units and holdings. It also separated its telephone service and unregulated units to ward off accusations of lax ethical practices. New television advertisements and customer outreach programs seem to be successfully changing consumer perception of the company. Nynex and other Baby Bells are hoping to earn the freedom to enter new markets such as long-distance service, manufacturing and cable television to remain competitive.

MCI-British Telecom venture is closer to launch; technical hurdles remain

Article Abstract:

MCI Communications Inc's joint venture with British Telecommunications PLC to provide international telecommunications services is stymied by phone equipment incompatibility among countries. The alliance involves British Telecom's purchase of 20 percent of MCI for $4.3 billion. MCI intends to apply the money towards its development of multimedia technology. MCI plans to form alliances and invest in the development of sophisticated applications for telecommunications, involving high-capacity networks, and the local distribution of telecommunications services. The challenge of the joint venture is to integrate the technologies of each business, since they presently employ network-management software systems that are incompatible.
