On extending Russell and Krajewski's algorithm for economic purchase order quantities

Article Abstract:

R.M. Russell and L.J. Krajewski took into account the transportation rate structure for less-than-truckload shipments in their optimal purchase order quantity algorithm. Application of the algorithm to a wide array of freight classes and lengths-of-haul shows that the use of freight rate schedules with the algorithm led to errors in order size decisions. Slight adjustments to the algorithm are needed before it can be used to determine the optimal purchase order quantity and the lowest total annual cost.

Interorganizational determinants of environmental purchasing: initial evidence from the consumer products industries

Article Abstract:

The concept of environmental purchasing requires that the purchasing function be concerned with activities such as reduction, recycling, reuse and material substitutions. A theoretical model that analyzes how interorganizational parameters both support and go against purchasing's participation in environmental programs. Data from the consumer goods industry were used. Results indicated that environmental purchasing activities can be helped by increased coordination with suppliers including retailers.

Outsourcing decisions and managerial incentives

Article Abstract:

An agency model which shows that firms outsource to improve managerial incentives is presented. The proposed model, which also assumes that outsourcing strictly dominates in-house production, argues that outsourcing makes a firm significantly better off. However, the benefit of outsourcing is affected by the trade-off between the incremental coordination costs of outsourcing and the improved incentive scheme. Moreover, the optimal contract is associated with whether or not the firm is publicly held.
