Only the shadow knows: shining a light on shadow demand

Article Abstract:

Few inventory managers have a clear picture of the full negative impact of out-of-stock situations. That is in part because most order-entry systems do not collect information concerning how customers react when they learn that a requested product is out of stock. Most methods of mitigating the effects of stockouts result from one of two basic concepts: rebalancing inventories to minimize stockout damage and inducing customers to accept backorders or substitute products instead of taking their business elsewhere.

Shedding Light on VDTs: Criteria for Re-Evaluating Your Lighting System

Article Abstract:

Lighting requirements for video display terminals (VDTs) involve the use of data entry and paper-based material. Four lighting criteria are considered for productivity: illuminance; task visibility; visual comfort probability; and glare control on the VDT screen. A photograph depicts a well-designed lighting system. Levels of illuminance are listed in foot-candles. Information concerning surfaces, the angle of the paper and keyboarding, as well as reflectance limits is included.
