Organization-wide change: planning for an effective announcement

Article Abstract:

A poorly communicated organizational change plan may result in the loss of important technical and management personnel, a reduction in productivity and the emergence of legal problems. In this light, companies thinking of initiating a change process should always take into consideration the manner by which such a decision will be announced to the whole organization. Making early plans regarding reorganization announcements avoids disruptive, inconsistent messages, rumors and general confusion. When devising an announcement strategy, general managers must consider the nature of the change and the organizational environment. They should also make sure that their communication strategy addresses the content of the message, the channel for the dissemination of the message, and the timing of the communication. A multi-stage, multi-method approach for communicating change is discussed.
