PCs' big three to join digital-TV fight

Article Abstract:

PC industry giants Microsoft, Intel, and Compaq are lobbying the consumer electronics industry to increase their emphasis on interactivity and information services for digital television. ELectronics manufacturers are currently focused on delivering digital TVs optimized for sophisticated home entertainment, including high-definition images, but not necessarily interactivity. The FCC is allowing the industry to determine its own standards for the new television format, which will begin broadcasting in ten top areas by 1999. PC makers are hoping that the transition to digital television systems will allow them to develop hybrid products to gain some of television's huge market share. PC makers favor a 'progressive-scan' technology for monitor display, which makes text more readable than on a conventional 'interlaced' television monitor. Some manufacturers are willing to support multiple formats, despite increased costs.

Microsoft plans big Digital-TV push, stressing hardware and programming

Article Abstract:

Microsoft is planning to market digital television by saturating the market, with the help of Intel and Compaq, with desktop computers that are equipped with digital TV tuners. Microsoft and Intel have both been working on deals with numerous companies in Hollywood and New York to produce Web-based proof-of-concept shows. Because Microsoft will be doing a great deal of the enhancement features, it is a relatively low-risk process for many producers. Big Ticket Television is working with Microsoft on a situation comedy. Direct TV also is planning to broadcast Web sites and other information for Microsoft. MTV is working on a sister network called M2 that will provide intercast programming features, as are NBC, CNN, QVC and WGBH.
