Pentagon worry: foreign bases as '00 dawns

Article Abstract:

Although the US Dept. of Defense feels confident concerning the Year 2000 Computer transition domestically, it is concerned about its over-300 military installations and the personnel inhabiting them in foreign countries. Although European compliance for Y2K is considered high, countries like Turkey and Italy may not be as well-prepared. The Defense Dept. is busy gathering information from local officials where the foreign installations are located to forestall major difficulties for military bases and personnel concerning water systems, power grids and phone lines. Some disruptions are expected to occur, but nothing that would compromise US and allied military readiness. The major questions that concern US military commanders are the functioning of seaport cargo handling equipment, power outages at civilian hospitals, crashing of automated security networks and operation of foreign air-traffic control systems.
