Pilbara unions face shock

Article Abstract:

If the iron ore operations of Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd. (BHP) and Rio Tinto's Hamersley Iron merge, there will be a great impact on the unions of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The Construction, Forestry and Mining Union is the dominant industry union, and it may be forced to accept individual contracts if the merger takes place.

About 60% of BHP Billiton's Pilbara iron ore operations workers have individual contracts, and 40% are unionised. New labor laws in Western Australia requiring wage matching and pay raises for award workers could make the dual system expensive for the mining company.

BHP mettle on test in the Pilbara

The BHP Iron Ore decision to begin using individual contracts at its Pilbara operations in north-west Western Australian in late 1999 is discussed. There are significant risks associated with moving away from a collective deal with employees.
