Portable PCs grow antennae for networking

Article Abstract:

The use of wireless networks is allowing a new level of computer portability. Utilizing radio frequency or infrared links. Wireless local area networks (LANs) are allowing organizations to utilize their computer systems in new ways. During the autumn of 1992 vendors are expected to introduce palmtop computers that can be integrated into a wireless network. Proxim Inc has introduced a device that is small enough to be inserted into portable computers and connects them to wireless LANs. The market for wireless networking technology is expected to total approximately $120 million during 1992 and grow at the rate of 65 percent annually, to reach $500 million by 1995. Currently, most wireless LANs are implemented to connect desktop microcomputers. Wireless networks provide corporations with the flexibility needed to utilize employee teams for only a few months at a time.

Electronic signatures boost security of PCs

Article Abstract:

Technologies are emerging that use standardized digital signatures to verify identity. The technique makes it possible to conduct business electronically. An industry observer says signature verification could be more important to commerce than the invention of the computer. WordPerfect Corp's InForms forms generation software will incorporate a digital-signature capability. In the summer of 1993, the US Department of Commerce will release a standard method for creating electronic signatures, which is called the Digital Signature Algorithm. Various ways to verify signatures are currently under development by firms such as Public Key Partners and RSA Data Security Inc. SDB Systems Inc's TeleSignature 2000 transmits an image of a signature across phone lines for visual verification.
