Ready-to-wear watchdogs

Article Abstract:

Companies such as DuPont, Burlington Industries, Motorola and Nano-Tex Inc. are researching and developing smart fabrics that repel body odor, change color, control heat or cold, resist wrinkling and give instructions to washing machines. M.I.T. is working on incorporating electronics devices, like cellular telephones into clothing. A global-positioning program can be melded into child's wear. Sensatex has developed a shirt that monitors all body functions with possible warnings of heatstroke or heart attack. With the use of nanotechnology, fabric engineering, winged fiber research, wearable computers and molecular-scaled sponges, clothes may some day become smarter than the wearer.

DuPont plans 'tracking' stock for life sciences

Article Abstract:

At least one analyst thinks perhaps DuPont is taking a step in the direction of merging with Monsanto as it looks at selling 'tracking' stock for its life sciences business. 1998 sales for the segment were $4.3 billion; it includes its pharmaceuticals, crop chemical products and nutrition & health businesses. Tracking stocks will allow following the value of the operation separate from the rest of the huge firm, but without voting power. DuPont would file the application with the SEC by the end of 1999.

Comment:

Tracking stock is planned for early 2000
