The power industry ranks low in the Value Line for Industry Timeliness, with its investment appeal quite limited. Burdened with debts coming due soon, the companies who are accused of artifically increasing electricity and manipulating the market in the winter of 2000-2001 by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, may have to refund billions to customers.

Natural gas distribution stocks or gas utilities are regulated but their activities outside distribution are unregulated. The demise of Enron and Arthur Andersen problems and the economic downturn have had their effect on the stocks and share prices.
