Pro-China candidates rebuffed in vote

Article Abstract:

Voters in Hong Kong did not elect legislative candidates that supported close ties with China, and China reacted by stating that the elected body would be dissolved when it assumed control in 1997. The new legislators hope to pass laws guaranteeing personal freedoms.

New governor takes office

Christopher Patten became governor of the British colony of Hong Kong on Jul 9, 1992. Patten will attempt to solve the dispute with China over the new Hong Kong airport and to preserve the free market as Hong Kong reverts to Chinese rule in 1997.
