Project management style and the Space Shuttle Program: a retrospective look

Article Abstract:

NASA's management of the Space Shuttle Program could have benefited from a more risk conscious approach that considered the untried technology involved and the potential for loss of life, such as the Challenger accident. The approach NASA used was more consistent with existing technology and made results a priority over safety. The safety procedures were undercut by budgetary concerns and demand for increased launches. Numerous warnings about safety concerns were waived or never seen by Shuttle management personnel.

Establishing a Department of Defense program management body of knowledge

Article Abstract:

Defense Department project management programs have been hampered by the lack of an adequate definition of the body of knowledge (BOK) necessary. An appropriate BOK of defense-related information was created from Defense Systems Management College and Air Force Institute of Technology's major areas of study by the Project Management Institute. The resulting curricula is being offered to major defense program directors and deputy directors. Their responses to consequent surveys will help refine the defense BOK.

Building commitment in project teams

Article Abstract:

Commitment is an important component of project management critical to the success of the whole project. Project managers are tasked with the enormous responsibility of instilling commitment to the project team members. They can accomplish this when they serve as role models, solicit feedback, provide chances for advancement, strive for improvements and focus on priorities.
