Provinces face credit crunch

Article Abstract:

The deficits of Canada's provinces are increasing, and credit agencies are evaluating the ratings of the provinces. The provinces, particularly Ontario, were responsible for 41% of the public-sector deficit in 1992-93, compared to 16% in 1988-89.

Taxes: House passes adoption tax credit

Article Abstract:

A bill approved on May 10, 1996, will permit families adopting children a one-time tax credit up to $5,000 for families earning under $75,000 per year. Interracial adoptions and native American tribal court jurisdiction bills are also discussed.

Utilities in 'pollution credit' swap

Tennessee Valley Authority will buy some $3 million per year of emissions trading credits from Wisconsin Power and Light Co. The pollution-credit system was authorized by the Clean Air Act of 1990.
