Rating the Candidates

Article Abstract:

There are many groups which examine the voting records of members of Congress and publish lists which rate the Congressmen. The four most nationally prominent scales rate the Congressional members as to their liberal, conservative, business or labor leanings. By examining issues of concern and checking the votes, each group rates the Congressmen by whether they voted for or against that bill. There is little doubt that these ratings do affect the election outcome. Many winners and lossers in the 1980 election, where there was a major shifting from liberalism to conservatism, attribute their outcome to how they were rated by the four major rating organizations. The 1982 election may also be determined, in part, by a rating given a particular Congressman by a particular rating group.

Issues That Could Affect Your Business

Article Abstract:

Legislation pending which could affect business is discussed, and those people to contact about the issues are provided. Some of the issues facing Congress in May, 1983, include: the 1984 budget which will affect the economic growth, employment and inflation; and the domestic content bill which is supposed to protect auto workers, but would result in losses due to foreign retaliation. Other issues pending in Congress include a jobs bill which would increase the federal deficit and slow recovery through increased spending; and a natural gas deregulation act which would eliminate unfair prices to business and would insure a fair price and long term supply.
