Remodularization of a product line: adding complexity to project management

Article Abstract:

Market demand for the production and delivery of high quality products at a faster rate is forcing companies to design or redesign product and process cycles. A way to meet the market demand is by architectural remodularization, which can either be autonomous or the centralized. In Sweden, a company took the centralized approach with two full-time design engineers for the project, while another used the autonomous model with the close participation of functional managers. Of the two, the autonomous model proved more effective in achieving both short- and long-term goals of the company.

From experience: linking projects to strategy

Article Abstract:

The steps that upper managers can take to create an environment for successful product development projects in their organizations are enumerated and reviewed. These include developing an upper management team to oversee project selection, working to develop a system of projects and consistent criteria that are used to prioritize projects and developing a system to manage the resource pool and reward interdepartmental cooperation. A complete model for selecting projects that support a strategic emphasis is also described.

Introducing interface management in new product family development

Article Abstract:

The concept of interface management (IM) in new product platform development was described and explored in two product family development projects in the Swedish manufacturing industry. It was proposed that companies which have a product family development approach that is associated with an extensive IM process enjoy a high degree of freedom in deciding how to balance its time to market individual products. The extent of the IMP process seemed to relate to the product family development scope.
