SSB and weighted linear utility as expected utility with suspicion

Article Abstract:

A 'suspicious' subjective expected utility (SEU) maximizer may act as if either the weighted linear utility or the skew-symmetric bilinear (SSB) utility were being maximized. SEU maximizers treat possible outcomes of states as information that is useful in evaluating the probability of those states. Weighted linear utility and SSB models can be interpreted as SEU when suspicion occurs. SEU with suspicion can explain several factors, including intransitive preferences, independence violations, dominance violations, the reference point effect, and the dependence on irrelevant alternatives.
