Article Abstract:

During the negotiations for free trade agreement between Australia and United States, Australian federal government compromised on offers that would have benefited its beef and cattle industry so that it could retain the monopolistic status of its wheat marketer, i.e., Australian Wheat Board (AWB). Australian government insisted on single desk for AWB, despite the fact that beef industry's exports were much higher. Now AWB's kickbacks to Saddam Hussein government against United Nations sanctions are being investigated.

The Australian dairy industry is looking forward to a free-trade agreement that will allow increased exports to the U.S. Dairy negotiations are expected to affect bilateral trade relations between the two nations. However, the agreement would have a minimal affect on the U.S. dairy industry.
