Santa brought many gizmos for the Internet

Article Abstract:

Internet-related products prove especially popular for the 1995 Christmas sales season, with fast modems, Internet access software and books about the Internet selling well. High-speed modems ranging from $80 to $230 are popular, as consumers express an interest in staying current with technological trends. In North America, analysts forecast sales of 17.8 million units in 1995, including modems preinstalled in computers, a 46% increase over 1994 totals. About 90% of all new computers now come with modems, a figure that is up 20% from 1994. New computers in 1995 also typically include software for sampling on-line services. A survey shows that one of every nine PC owners plans to join an on-line service during the holiday period. Consumers are also buying high-speed microprocessors for fast downloading and Internet navigation and 15-inch or 17-inch monitors for viewing graphics on the World Wide Web.

Texas Instruments is ready to launch 2 new notebook computers next week

Article Abstract:

Texas Instruments' (TI) introduces two Pentium-based notebooks, including the $4,999 Travelmate 6030, in an attempt to consolidate and leverage the company's increasing share of the US and world notebook markets. The Travelmate 6030 includes a 12-in monitor, high-speed Pentium and is $1,300 and 2 pounds less than Toshiba's competing model. TI has increased its percentage of worldwide notebook sales to 4.2% and its share of the US market to 8%, and TI executives hope to capture the second or third position in the world market before 1998. Analysts are impressed by TI's ability to maintain the technological strength of its product line while simultaneously improving its efforts in marketing and distribution. However, market leaders IBM and Compaq are introducing competitive new models, and Toshiba continues to compound its overall lead in world sales.
