Scheduling outpatient appointments in a dynamic environment

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to compare the different client scheduling rules of medical service provider to minimize the waiting time of clients and the idle time of the service provider. A simulation model of a dynamic medical outpatient environment was structured using information collected through interviews and previous research. It was discovered that the 'best' decisions are based on the goals of the clinic and its environment. Nevertheless, good or best results can be achieved if clients having significant service time standard deviations are scheduled toward the end of the appointment schedule.
