Scheduling with sequencing flexibility

Article Abstract:

Even low levels of sequencing flexibility are found to result in substantial improvement in scheduling rule performance in terms of mean flowtime in manufacturing system operations. Sequencing flexibility, a measure of feasible alternative task sequences for a job in a manufacturing system, can be found in conventional systems as well as those using new technologies such as flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). A method of quantitative measurement of sequencing flexibility is described. Performance measures for manufacturing systems include proportion of tardy jobs, average tardiness, as well as mean flowtime.

Lot-sizing decisions under limited-time price reduction

Article Abstract:

This study focuses on optimal lot-sizing policies for an inventoried item that the vendor will offer at a limited-time price reduction. Based upon the discounted cash flow analysis methodology, the authors develop an algorithm, finally recommending the 'early purchase' heuristic version of the discounted-cash flow analysis. The study found there are implications for supply chain management as well, creating the 'bullwhip effect' in the supply chain.

Retailers' response to alternate manufacturer's incentives under a single-period, price-dependent, stochastic-demand framework

Article Abstract:

A method of developing an optimal pricing and ordering policies is suggested for retailers who are offered incentives by manufacturers in form of rebates for bulk purchases in one period. In addition, these retailers also face the constraint of a variable demand based on selling price of the product.
