Sears settles suit on raising of its credit card rates

Article Abstract:

Though it doesn't have court approval as yet, a class-action suit brought against Sears Roebuck will be settled with $36 million cash and $118 million in store coupons to the plaintiffs; attorneys will receive $15 million in cash for their services. The plaintiffs were Sears credit card customers who were notified that their interest rates on account balances would not increase when the accounts were moved to a newly-acquired Arizona bank.

Wal-Mart casts eye northward; retailer pushes expansion, squeezing regional chains

Article Abstract:

Wal-Mart has a presence in every state, with 6 stores in Hawaii, 6 in Alaska, and 4 in tiny Vermont. Vermont didn't give in easily in 1990 when the first store was proposed. Now Wal-Mart is plannng its further expansion, primarily in the Northeast and the West. With a new superstore in Vermont, annual sales are expected to reach $3 billion.

Outlets slipping out of fashion; traditional stores counter as off-price malls overreach

Article Abstract:

Outlet malls are estimated to have reached year-ago sales levels whereas traditional malls and retail stores in general showed growth of almost 6%. There are several reasons felt to be at work here; one, savvier shoppers; two, more sales in traditional stores; three, fashion-conscious discounters. Investing in outlets also cooled down.
