Management of venous ulcers

Article Abstract:

Chronic venous insufficiency can lead to venous ulcers from persistent hypertension in the veins of the legs. Failure of venous valves or the calf muscles, which together pump blood back to the heart, can lead to tissue ischemia and ulceration. Dependent edema and erythema are initial signs of venous insufficiency. Compression stockings and lower-limb elevation can facilitate venous return. Fastidious, non-cytotoxic wound care can prevent exacerbations which may require surgical correction.
