Former police officer Santos Garza bought Counter Technology Inc when it was struggling in 1987. Then it specialized mostly in debugging services, but Garza had it branch out into a wide variety of security-related services. It has gone from $88,000 in revenues to $14 million in just seven years.

Small and mid-size businesses are discovering that recycling is not only socially conscious, but an effective means of significantly cutting costs. For example, Aquapore Moisture Systems, which manufactures garden hoses, saves about $9,000 each month by reusing rubber scrap.
