Self-managed teams: assessing the benefits for small service-sector firms

Article Abstract:

Self-managed teams can make a contribution to improving a company's performance in certain areas, according to research undertaken among small UK service-sector companies. However, these companies must be aware that the impact of a shift towards more independent work groups is not entirely predictable. Small business managers must carefully look at the company's specific circumstances and then assess whether the creation of self-managed teams will bring about the required improvements. Self-managed teams may not assist companies where poor performance is attributable to inability to optimize workforce effectiveness.
