Senate adopts no-smoking standard for both US and foreign airlines

Article Abstract:

The US Senate endorsed a new anti-smoking measure that would curtail smoking on international flights. While smoking has already been banned on most US domestic airlines, the Senate measure calls for the Dept. of Transportation to require that foreign airlines ban smoking on flights either coming or going into the United States, or that some negotiated compromise is reached which would reduce smoking during such flights. The intent of the legislation is to pressure foreign carriers, and their governments, to support anti-smoking restrictions at international aviation meetings during the fall 1998.
