Silicon project energised by cheap power

Article Abstract:

Australia's Portman Mining and Japan's Iwatani International Corp. have contracted, at a 50% reduction in costs, an unnamed electric utility to provide electrical power for its silicon metal mining project in New South Wales. The power agreement is believed to be priced at a low two cents a unit. Chemical grade silicon sells for about $1800 a ton, and metallic grade sells for up to $1400 a ton. Power supply represents about 22% of the project's operating costs. Portman will partner with mine contractor Theiss to develop the silicon project. Iwatani will contribute equity and marketing expertise.
