Sky Wars

Article Abstract:

Since Congress deregulated the air transport industry in 1979, competitors have fought over routes, rates and passengers. The result has been confusion brought on by price wars, by too much service in some areas and too little service in others by fledgling airlines offering cut-rate fares, and by sought-after mergers between carriers. The airline industry suffered its worst year on record in 1980. The third quarter upturn did not help recovery from a dismal first half, brought on by a four percent passenger decline and the rising cost of fuel. Half the industry's losses involved the ten big trunks. Many regional airlines showed record profits.
