GTE sets big test of pocket phones in Tampa Bay area; Floridians will be monitored on use of wireless units designed for pedestrians

Article Abstract:

GTE Corp's Tele-Go Phone Service is a 15-month field test of personal communications services (PCS) that will involve 3,000 customers in Tampa Bay, FL. PCS offers an inexpensive wireless phone service for pedestrians from a pocket-sized phone; data transmission is also possible from a notebook computer. GTE's test will utilize its cellular network in Tampa Bay. Respondents will be asked to pay a $175 refundable fee for the equipment and usage will be monitored by GTE via its computerized network switches. The Tele-Go Phone Service test will be administered by GTE and its partners, AT&T Network Systems and Northern Telecom Inc. Oki Telecom will provide the pocket phones that will be used for the test.

GTE President Lee to become chairman and chief after Johnson retires in May

Article Abstract:

Charles R. Lee, president and chief operating officer at GTE Corp, is selected to be chairman and CEO when Chmn James L. Johnson retires in May 1992. GTE has been doing well in the telecommunications business, moving toward all-digital telephone systems, expanding into cellular services and investing overseas. According to Jack B. Grubman, a telecommunications analyst with PaineWebber Inc, Chuck Lee is well qualified for the difficult and challenging world that is today's telecommunications industry.
