Soft and hard models of human resource management: a reappraisal

Article Abstract:

There are two forms of human resource management (HRM), namely: soft, which focuses on control through commitment, and hard, which utilizes control through strategic organizational objectives. These two HRM forms are highly distinctive from each other so that incorporating them in one model will be difficult. Thus, eight case studies, were conducted to analyze HRM. Results indicate that all the organizations included in the study did not employ any pure form of the two HRM perspectives. Instead, the HRM being practised by organizations is a combination of both.
