Some socio-cultural factors retarding entrepreneurial activity in sub-Saharan Africa

Article Abstract:

Some governments of sub-Saharan African countries have tried to tap the entrepreneurial spirit of their citizens by sponsoring entrepreneurship development programs. However, these programs have failed to consider the cultural aspect of entrepreneurship. Three socio-cultural factors found within these countries were identified as limitations to entrepreneurial development: power distance, collectivism and Confucian dynamism. These and other socio-cultural factors in sub-Saharan Africa must be addressed if government programs are to succeed in stimulating its local entrepreneurs.

A comparative study of values among Chinese and U.S. entrepreneurs: pragmatic convergence between contrasting cultures

Article Abstract:

A convergence of values among Chinese and Western entrepreneurs is expected as China adopts a market-driven economy. Chinese entrepreneurs found in high-growth places possess values similar to their American counterparts. Chinese entrepreneurs, however, are pragmatic, with close affinity to family security and to values prohibiting conspicuous wealth and outward recognition of accomplishments.
