Southwestern Bell, BellSouth set union pacts

BellSouth Corp and Southwestern Bell Corp reach tentative agreements with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) over labor issues. The contracts, featuring an 11.3 percent pay increase for BellSouth workers and a 12.3 percent increase for Southwestern Bell workers, will last for three years if approved by union membership. The unions represent technicians, operators and clerical staff. Contracts between the CWA and IBEW were extended at Ameritech Corp, Bell Atlantic Corp and Pacific Telesis Corp. The companies are negotiating and strikes are not expected. The central negotiating issues for the Baby Bell companies have been wages, job security and health care. Industry observers note that the weakened economy makes both management and workers more motivated to reach a settlement without a strike.

Bell Atlantic, CWA reach tentative pact on wages, benefits; more talks slated

Bell Atlantic Corp. and the CWA reach a tentative agreement on wages and benefits and agree to talk further on local issues. Talks continue with the IBEW and a CWA spokeswoman says CWA members will not cross IBEW picket lines even if a CWA contract is signed. The tentative CWA contract calls for a three percent base wage increase in the first year and a 2.25 percent increase for each of the next two years plus cost-of-living adjustments. Bell also agrees to set up a profit-sharing plan for non-management, a network of doctors and hospitals who will agree to company-established reimbursement rates, a medical and dental trust fund for retirees and help for employees with children and elderly relatives. In the other Bell strikes, Pacific Telesis reports some progress but Nynex and Ameritech and the unions are still far apart.

Bell Atlantic, cable-TV operator reach pact to offer service over phone lines

Bell Atlantic Corp signs an unprecedented 10-year agreement with FutureVision of America Corp, a start-up based in Downingtown, PA. FutureVision will transmit programming and other video services over fiber-optic phone lines provided by Bell Atlantic. The contract marks the first time a regional Bell operating company has joined with a cable service to offer telephone customers an alternative to their cable TV service. The fully interactive Bell Atlantic/FutureVision system in Toms River, NJ, will compete against that city's sole cable company, Adelphia Cable Communications Corp. Cable operators and telephone companies have been weighing opportunities to enter each other's business. Current government regulations bar Bell phone companies from owning more than 5 percent of a video programmer.
