Start-up leads phone cause in battle for Internet access

Article Abstract:

Northpoint Communications Group Inc. works with local telephone companies to gain 'co-location,' or space for their DSL servers in the telco's switching stations. A digital subscriber line, or DSL, works over regular copper phone lines, within a 4 mile radius of these servers. Northpoint then sells access to this equipment to ISPs, who in turn market the service to consumers. Presently, Northpoint has a stock market capitalization of about $5 billion, on FY98 revenues of $1mil. DSL is shaping up to be the telcos' chief alternative to competition from cable Internet access. Analysts see services like Northpoint becoming the back end to many ISP companies or being bought by a telco.

America Online buys When Inc., an Internet calendar provider

Article Abstract:

AOL purchased When Inc. (www.when.com) for an undisclosed amount. When Inc. offers users the ability to keep a personal calendar on the Web, which they then can access from any Internet terminal. When.com offers other groups and businesses a place to promote events; users can tap into this information as they create their schedule. AOL sees this service as an important point of entry for users of the Web, one which users will spend time with, rather than clicking off to something else. AOL will offer a new version of When.com this summer, and will feature it at its America Online, Compuserve, and Netscape Netcenter online services.
