Strategic manufacturing management: restructuring wasteful production to world class

Article Abstract:

A guide to implementing a strategic management change in a manufacturing concern is proposed. Strategic management toward manufacturing competitiveness requires organizational flexibility, clarity of vision and integrated planning. In this regard, a competitive strategy defines a firm's approach to outperforming its rivals, given capabilities that are determined by its customers' needs. The four generic manufacturing strategies are the traditional caretaker and marketeer options, which emphasize least cost and differentiation tactics; the innovator reorganizer, which stresses world-class design and capabilities; and the wasteful type. These are categorized according to a matrix of relative differentiation and relative costs. Analysis of the market stance of 12 Britishmanufacturers yields a plan for strategic change toward the innovator reorganizer option.

Manufacturing mobility? Internalization, change and continuity

Article Abstract:

The spatial relocation of manufacturing productions significantly affects organization management and decision-making processes. Associated with changes in international labor and employment patterns, it also influences market outcomes, consumption and production concerns. Other factors that influence spatial relocations include foreign direct investments, communications, regional economic blocs, and the growth of multinational companies. Managers are urged to adapt a more independent approach in the spatial relocation of their production operations. They are also encouraged to concentrate more on continuity concepts that have been proven useful in productional internalization and localization within industries.
