Stress on the job: an executive update

Article Abstract:

Job stress cases are increasing in the 1990s as indicated by increases in work compensation and insurance claims. Primary sources of job stress are downsizing, workforce diversity, technological changes, work and domestic conflict, and workplace environment. Workers who felt that they were severely affected by job stress filed for worker compensations claims for the recovery of compensatory damages. Business organizations can lessen or prevent the occurrence of job stress through proper employee training, employee assistance programs and programs addressing work and domestic conflict.

The Soviet enterprise director - an important resource before and after the coup

Article Abstract:

Soviet managers now face the problem of competing in a free enterprise after spending several decades in a centrally-controlled environment. The Soviet Union's restructuring program has resulted in the privatization of companies and the abolition of monopolies. Control has shifted from a central to a more individual focus. Soviet managers are now having difficulty coping with this new situation. Industry experts believe that they must combine Western and Japanese managerial techniques with their unique Soviet ways in order to succeed.
