Suharto reelected, names deputy

Article Abstract:

Indonesian Pres Suharto Mar 11, 1993, was sworn in for his sixth consecutive five-year term. Suharto immediately selected Gen Try Sutrisno to serve as his vice president. The selection of Sutrisno made him a leading candidate to replace Suharto when the 71-year-old president retires.

Croatia held its first direct presidential election on Aug 2, 1992, and Franjo Tudjman was reelected. Fifty countries participated in a conference on the Balkan refugee crisis on Jul 29-30, 1992.

British Prime Minister Major reelected; Conservatives' majority trimmed in fourth straight win

UK Prime Minister John Major was reelected on Apr 9, 1992, giving the Conservative Party its fourth straight victory. The Conservative Party won 336 out of 651 seats in the House of Commons.
