Supreme Court overturns racially based Congressional district

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court voted 5-4 that Georgia's 11th Congressional district must be redrawn because its boundaries were established primarily to ensure minority representation. The majority decision in Miller v Johnson said race cannot be the 'predominant factor' in creating an election district.

High court voids Colorado law barring gay rights protection

Article Abstract:

The United States Supreme Court ruled to overturn a controversial Colorado constitutional amendment on the grounds that it violated homosexual's rights to equal protection under the law. The ruling was made on May 20, 1996, and it was passed by a 6-3 majority vote.
