Tax Watchdogs Suspend Vigil In Texas for '99

Article Abstract:

The Texas Council of Advertising and Magazine Publishing (TCAMP), a watchdog group which defends the industry's interests in the Texas legislature, has confirmed that it is abandoning its lobbying efforts due to a lack of pressing issues and decreasing member support. Individual board members will still be able to use their contacts in the legislature and government-relations committees ofother trade groups, such as the American Advertising Federation, but the organization will not directly lobby the government on taxes and other issues. TCAMP has long had difficulty collecting dues from agencies outside the largest shops in Dallas and Austin. Officials of the watchdog group say that the group's function in protecting the industry is crucial and that 'catch up' efforts may be necessary if the legislature turns hostile to advertisers.
