Technology's towers invade the forest

Article Abstract:

NPI Wireless, a regional wireless phone company in northwest Michigan, was turned down by the county of Benzie when it proposed to build a 250-foot tower. The purpose of the tower is to provide wireless communication services, with an array of antennas and receivers, to the numerous telecommuters that have migrated to that region. The county has instituted a moratorium against such towers in an effort to keep the area rural. NPI has filed a law suit against the county and analysts expect the wireless company to win. The expected success is due to the Telecommunications Act which the FCC and the White House created with the aid of the wireless communications industry. The developement of the wireless telecommunications industry was a leading issue in the creation of the Act.
