Housing out-performed forecasts of analysts for 1983. Housing starts reached 1,701,300 units. Analysts now predict a repeat or slightly higher number for 1984. January figures are higher so far. Adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMS) are being more widely used now than in the past. The resale market has also increased.

An index developed by a builder's magazine suggests strong future building activity. Homes are showing higher average prices. This seems to indicate that home buyers want larger, costlier houses. Land values are increasing and may threaten stable prices.
