The Japanese Management Theory Jungle

Article Abstract:

Many theories about the reasons for the superiority of Japanese business management have been advanced, with many conflicting opinions. The components of some of those theories are examined. A chart illustrates the basic factors of Japanese management practices. Japanese cultural factors account in part for the difficulty in Westerners understanding the reasons for Japanese industrial success. Theorists seeking explanations tend to overlook factors outside of their own special fields. Suggestions are made for pursuing further clarification.

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy as a Management Tool

Article Abstract:

A model of self-fulfilling prophecy is presented. The Pygmalion effect, or the manipulation of leader expectancy to improve subordinate performance, is emphasized. A review of the organizational research on the Pygmalion effect is provided. The model integrates five major concepts. These are supervisor expectancy, leadership, performance, motivation and subordinate self-expectancy. Issues for future research and application are identified. Ethical concerns are noted.
