The Strategic Management Process: A Model and Terminology

Article Abstract:

A model for analyzing the strategic management process is presented. The terminology used in this process is defined. Strategic management includes two phases: strategic planning and strategy implementation. A diagram outlines the strategic management process. The planning phase includes defining the organization's purpose, formulating policies, establishing long and short term objectives, identifying strategic alternatives and selecting appropriate strategy. The implementation phase entails developing an organizational structure, managing organizational activities and monitoring the strategy's effectiveness. These components are interdependent rather than separate.

Strategic Planning Practices of Investor-Owned Electric Utilities

Article Abstract:

A study is performed to determine the extent to which strategic planning is used by investor-owned electric utilities. A questionnaire format is used to answer specific questions regarding utility organization, strategic planner profiles and strengths and weaknesses of the strategic planning processes. Tables provide statistics concerning earned rate of return on equity, annual revenues and regulatory climate. Planning factors and problems involved in strategic planning are outlined. Results show that strategic planning has not been incorporated into investor-owned electric utilities. The direction of the utilities needs redefining.
