The camera never lies, but the software does

Article Abstract:

Adobe Systems' Adobe Photodeluxe for Windows 95 offers many tools and a relatively straightforward interface and is designed for the average computer user. Photodeluxe accepts photographs from digital cameras, scanners and the Snappy video capture tool as well as most popular graphical formats. The program leads users through several basic activities, but it offers a far richer selection of tools than those demonstrated, and some effects are mentioned only in the manual or not at all. The 'on your own' button brings up a full featured image editor with which users can add adjustable effects. The un-do function is limited to a single un-do and re-do, although more levels of un-do would be helpful. Photodeluxe build images with a layering technique that provides outstanding results, but it also requires some training. Each image consists of as many as six layers, and users may rearrange the order of the layers or erase part of a layer to reveal the underlying layer. Photodeluxe costs about $90.

Some gadgets that are still not ready for prime time

Article Abstract:

The products displayed at the 1997 Demo conference lacked their usual imagination and creativity. This year the products seemed to lean toward usable but unnecessary, rather than attempting to meet the needs of users or introducing creative solutions. Storm Technology's Easyphoto Phone software allows a user to send a photo and converse about it over a single phone connection. Compressent displayed a product called Chromafax, which sends and receives faxes in color, provided that both the send and receiver have the same Chromafax software. Verifone's Personal ATM product is designed to withdraw electronic cash from a bank account by putting it on a smart card. These products all work but are not needed or especially creative.
