The challenge of autonomy and dependence in franchised channels of distribution

Article Abstract:

Combinations of autonomy and dependence among the franchised channel of fastfood restaurants can emerge within a franchised setting. The emergence of four dependence and autonomy combinations such as the high-high and low-low combinations as well as the traditional high-low combinations, indicates that the behavioral settings of franchises are more in-depth. The structural factor of multi-unit ownership, the environmental factor of competition, and the relationship factor of business success in the franchised system emerged as significant dependence and autonomy predictors.

Multi-unit franchising: growth and management issues

Article Abstract:

A study of fast-food franchise systems showed that chains can achieve more rapid growth by engaging more in multi-unit franchising instead of franchise systems in general. The level of commitment expressed by franchisors toward the continuation of franchising efforts was found to have a negative relationship with the average number of units per franchisee and with their ability to secure additional financial capital.
