The National Australia Bank (NAB) currency scandal has created doubts in the mind of many about the usefulness of forensic accountants who could detect flaws in the accounting system of any company but there are many audit firms who dispute this theory. A lot of mid-tier firms are struggling to attract work after the NAB debacle and all investigative jobs are being given to the big four auditing companies around the world.

Software hardball

Sage Group, a British business-software seller, is planning to expand its market share in Australia. The company faces competitors like MYOB and Reckon. Sage's product line includes Accpac, an accounting software for companies, Sage ACT, a customer relations management software and MicrOpay, a payroll software. Sage's HandiSoft is considerably popular with small accounting firms.

Boymal urges caution

Article Abstract:

David Boymal, the new chairman of the Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB) plans to set cautionary standards. He would recommend that the board reject the international accounting standards' requirement for Australian companies to restate their 2004 accounts if the international standards-setting body does not have all its new standards ready by March 2004.
