The development of strategies by international commercial banks

Article Abstract:

Research confirms that the world banking system became increasingly competitive, deregulated, and international over 25 years beginning around 1958, although not in a uniform way. Cultural, regulatory, and structural influences are identified and described for banks with operations outside their own nations who are headquartered in one of the following five countries: the US, UK, France, Germany, or Japan. Bank responses to changing environments are characterized as falling within one of four categories: new international strategies; focus strategies on products, customer market segments, or geography; new expansionist strategies; or actions influenced by financial or other non-market factors.

Internationalization: evolution of a concept

Article Abstract:

The process of internationalization of businesses is explored. Before the mid-seventies, internationalization followed a sequential process of 'gradual internationalization', or 'stages thesis'. Since that time the pace has accelerated to the point that some companies are passing over the traditional stages to deeper commitment.
