The future turns dark

Article Abstract:

Australia's chances of remaining a leader in solar power technology are looking meager with the decision of BP Solar to spend $US 100 million on a new factory in Spain to produce solar power equipment. Mark Twidell, regional manager of BP Solar in Australia, says that the high cost of product development, low cost of other energy sources, limited support from the government, local ideas going overseas to be developed are the major impediments for the growth of Australia's solar power industry.

Big bill for cleaner fuel

The struggling oil refiners are facing a bill of more than one billion dollars in order to ensure that their plants comply with tough new fuel quality standards. This would in turn result in the emergence of new pressures for rationalisation.
