The impact of discharge decisions on health care quality

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize the effect of hospital discharging decisions during resource shortages using a framework that supports dynamics associated with health care units. The framework considers the occupancy level of the unit and patient status based on the time and stage of their recovery. Numerical experiments were carried out with published medical data on patients treated in intensive care units to describe the study methodology. The framework also supported partial differential equations and boundary conditions to characterize the state of the system. Results showed that early discharge options significantly enhances system accessibility. Findings also indicated that these options promote quality of care among patients and other operational performance measures.

Advertising cost interactions and the optimality of pulsing

Article Abstract:

A one-state advertising model that analyzes the impact of fixed and pulsing costs on optimal advertising strategies is presented. Previous research has recommended either the even policy, which involves scheduling exposures evenly; or the chattering policy, which involves alternating between no advertising and high levels of advertising infinitely during the finite planning period. However, the model shows that pulsing policy, which involves alternating between no advertising and high levels of advertising with finite frequency, can be optimal under a reasonable condition due to the interaction of fixed and pulsing costs.
