Chris Knoblanche, the head of Big Five accounting firm Arthur Andersen and Co., has a no-nonsense and verbal management style that has resulted in several changes to the Australian company. Knoblanche has closed non-core business areas, such as assurance and business advisory. Knoblanche has decided to focus on legal, tax/business advisory, group corporate finance, audit/business advisory, and business consulting. His restructuring has resulted in a projected company growth of 22 to 25% for the year to September 1, 1999.

KPMG turns in a big US profit year

KPMG Australia claims that global management, not profit pools, is the key to true globalization, and that it is not necessary to compete head-to-head with the Big Five on every product. KPMG is now globally managing audit, tax, and consulting lines. The firm also focusing on its disaggregated concerns with an impending merger of its Australian and New Zealand operations and the focus on regionalization of practices in the Asia-Pacific market.

From little returns, big fees grow
