Hitachi to disclose agreement to sell IBM's Unix servers

Article Abstract:

Hitachi Ltd. will sell IBM's Unix servers, which IBM has been developping under the code name Regatta, beginning next year. In addition, the two firms will jointly develop and manufacture certain chips. Regatta uses IBM's new Power4 microprocessors.

Linux, maverick of computing, gets respectable

Article Abstract:

The free Linux operating system is quickly becoming popular. Royal Dutch/Shell Group, Home, Depot, Amerada Hess are using Linux supercomputers and IBM plans to spend $1.3 billion on the product. Linux is gaining support as a foil to Microsoft and Sun Microsystems software while gaining a 27% share for computer servers in 2001. Windows 2000 had a 41% share. Company programmers can modify Linux fro their own purposes. California Pizza Kitchen has adapted Linux databases for real estate acquisitions and Musicland and Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse have also joined the Linux club.

The real Y2K problem: computer sales; customers freeze purchases while they wait to see what happens in 2000

Article Abstract:

Many businesses, such as financial service companies, have placed a freeze on computer purchases for the next six months. Computer hardware industry sales are expected to slow Q4 '99 and Q1 '00, but then rebound Q2 year 2000. Companies are hesitant to add new equipment until they are certain that their existing systems have weathered the year 2000 transition. Meanwhile, computer software development proceeds, spurred by e-commerce related demand.
