The role of a professional body in management development: from exclusion to empowerment

Article Abstract:

The Institute of Health Services Management is the professional body that represents senior managers in the UK's National Health Service (NHS). Traditionally, its members have required both specialist knowledge and qualifications and has been seen as exclusivist. The radical changes in the NHS in the late 1980s saw a disintegration in traditional career paths and the introduction of the internal market challenged the integrity of the Institute. The changes have seen the Institute relax membership regulations and move from a position of exclusion and professional certification towards development and empowerment.

The body: Bulletproof

The prospect of gene therapy that would make it possible in next two decades to increase the body's healing power, induce it to regenerate lost limbs or organs, even to slow or halt human aging is described. If we could find medication that would enhance our performance, lengthen our life, decrease the stress, then no regulation in the world would keep us from getting at them.
